The Andrew Gregory line now has a participant in the FTDNA GREGORY PROJECT as Kit #88303.  As of June 8, 2007 the information has not been entered at the YSEARCH site.  The results are a 37 marker exact match to James Gregory of Lunenburg.  James and Andrew are a 1 marker difference from Joseph Gregory of Mecklenburg, that is, a 36 marker match out of 37.

Andrew Gregory 1st appeared 1764 along with James Gregory, taxed with John Smith in Saint James Parish, the part of Lunenburg Co., VA that became Mecklenburg the following year.
In 1767, deed record of John Smith to Andrew Gregory includes the following Gregory witnesses: Joseph Gregory & John Gregory. In 1766, adjoining land  from John Smith to Edward Slaughter was witnessed by James Gregory and Wm Gregory.  The John Gregory and Wm Gregory have not been identified elsewhere, unless this could have been the William Gregory son of Ziner Gregory (female).

It is not possible for me to include all of the records on Andrew Gregory.  Hopefully the pertinent ones are included.

Signed - John Smith. Wit - Mack Goode Jr, John Stembridge, Joseph Gregory. rec 12 Nov 1767.
A memorandum to the deed (same date) was witnessed by Mack Goode Jnr., John Stembridge, John Gregory, Lunenburg Co., Va.

These 3 deeds for land on Juniper Creek in Lunenburg bring together the names James Gregory, Wm Gregory, Andrew Gregory, Joseph Gregory and John Gregory, causing us to look at them as probable relatives.  James Gregory is the only one who actually settled in the Juniper Creek area.  Andrew Gregory settled in Mecklenburg.  Joseph Gregory settled in NW Mecklenburg (branching across the county lines into Charlotte and Lunenburg).  It is not known if the "John Gregory" in the memorandum was a clerical error and should have read "Joseph Gregory" like the deed.   It was too early for the John Gregory to have been a son of Andrew or of Joseph.  Possibly "John" was a brother of whom we have no account, or even the father. The witness Wm Gregory, likewise, was of age to witness, therefore too old to have been a son of Andrew Gregory of Meck. or Joseph Gregory Senior.

The dates of these deeds, 1766/1767, are after Mecklenburg Co. was cut from Lunenburg; yet, at least John Smith, and Andrew Gregory were styled "of Mecklenburg."  This was 6 years before Joseph Gregory (Senior) 1st purchased land in Mecklenburg in 1772.

Silas M. Gregory willed to Alexander Smith & Giles Crafton (each married to daus. of Robert S. Gregory, bro. of Silas) the "land on which I now reside east of the road leading from Gregory Store to Clarksville" (Maybe "A. Smith" on Section 6 of Civl War map, or "A. Smith" may have been Alexander who married Elizabeth C. Gregory d/o Robert S. Gregory.)  Chase City & Its Environs p. 66,67 says Alexander Smith built "Plainview" (later "Reveille") in 1842 on the site of the plantation of his father, Archer Smith.
