Mrs Isaac Hill (Sarah Ann Sargeant)

For Mrs Isaac Hill Was At Home of Her Daughter in Lincoln When End Came Monday Morning Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock for Mrs. Sarah Ann Hill who passed on Monday morning at 8 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Margaret J. Brough in Lincoln, Ill. The funeral sermon was preached by Eld. C. M. Weaver of Johnston City at the Primitive Baptist church on East Webster avenue, following the services interment was made in the King cemetery, southwest of Ewing. Mrs. Hill had been ill some three weeks, suffering from a heart attack and complications that followed. The body was brought to Benton Tuesday and taken to the home of her son, W. Joe Hill, local attorney and publisher of The Standard, where it remained until the hour of the funeral. Mrs. Hill had spent much of her life in Franklin county and was well known and highly respected here. The following obituary was prepared by T. J. Layman and read at the funeral service: Sarah Ann Hill was the daughter of John L. and Mary Milner Seargeant. She was born in Ripley, Mississippi, on May 14th 1848. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Margaret J. Brough, at Lincoln, Illinois, on the morning of May 13th, 1932. She was the second of a family of eight children of whom the brother, Milner, and a sister, Mrs. Martha C. Young, survive. Her father was a native of the state of Tennessee. Her mother was born and reared in Yorkshire, England, coming to America on a sailing vessel and landing at the City of New Orleans. When Mrs. Hill was a small child her parents removed to the state of Alabama, near the City of Florence and there remained until the year 1865 when they came to Illinois and settled near Ashley. When Mrs. Hill was in a reminiscent mood she would relate the most interesting manner the story of her girlhood in the south. She would recount the stirring days of the Civil War. Her father strongly sympathized with the Union cause and his life was constantly in danger. She would tell of the long journey from Alabama to Illinois by way of Nashville, Tennessee, and the Cumberland and Ohio rivers to Cairo thence up the Illinois Central Railroad to Ashley. The maternal grandfather of Mrs. Hill was a manufacturer of broad cloth who had learned his craft in England. Through his instructions, Mrs. Hill and her father became proficient in the art of spinning. After coming to Illinois they assisted Richard Richeson in the operation of the woolen mills at "Old Ewing". While living in Ewing she married Isaac Hill on February 20th, 1878. This happy union was broken by the death of Mr. Hill on June 29th, 1927. To them was born nine children of whom five sons, Samuel Seargeant, James Tolbert, Emery T, Albert J and W. Joe, and two daughters, Mrs. Margaret J. Brough and Mrs. Mary E. Dawson, are living. She is also survived by two step-sons, George W. and Isaac Ra-Hill. Mrs. Hill was a devoted wife and mother. The gracious hospitality that she and Isaac Hill extended made a visit to their home an event long to be remembered. She was --- many years, a faithful.
