Hispanic Soldiers in California

We know the names of nearly all the soldiers, and a few of the sailors, who were under arms from 1779 until 1783 while Spain, along with the American Colonies, was at war with England. For convenience, these can be presented in seven parts, with the first four the garrisons of the Presidios of San Diego, Monterey, San Francisco, and Santa Barbara. The fifth group includes those who served in the two mission settlements among the Yuma Indians on the Colorado River, or who were there with Captain Rivera at the time of the Massacre by the Yumas in July, 1781. Some soldiers from Presidios in Arizona and Sonora later took part in Expeditions against the Yumas. The sixth group includes the soldiers who served with the missions and pueblos in Coastal Alta California. It also includes others who appeared in mission records without explanation. They may have been couriers or visitor escorts from other parts of Mexico. The seventh group includes the sailors of the armed frigates the "Princesa" and the "Favorita" who were sent to capture Captain James Cook.

(These soldiers may have died or transferred back to Mexico. No families are known for them.) (Owen H. O'Neill, in his History of Santa Barbara County, page 54, gives the 1 July list, as taken from Lt Ortega's report, to be the same as that above, less the same four persons.)

There is another list of those who were said to be at the founding ceremony for the new Presidio. (Ref: Hawley, Walter A. "Los Soldados de Cuero," Appendix I, p 96, The Early Days of Santa Barbara, California, 1923). It included some names not shown by Lt Ortega in his official reports: Sgt Jose Carrillo*; Privates: Jose Ayala*; Juan Ballesteros; Salvador Cervantes; Juan Dominguez*; Isidro German*; Juan M. Romero*; Jose Ruiz; Tadeo Sanchez*; Juan Franco Soto; Jose Valencia*; and Vicente F. Villa. (The authority for this list is not known.)

Fr. Zephyrin Engelhardt, O. F. M. on p 40 in his Santa Barbara Mission, 1923, includes for the founding ceremony those listed by Hawley plus the names of Indian attendants, who military status has not been determined. One would think they represented the local Indian groups, which may have been the case. However, they all show full Christian names, usually given only to Indians from Mexico who had been indoctrinated as Spanish Christians. They were: Jose Calixto; Hilario Carlos; Rafael Gerardo; Jose Loreto; Manuel Orcha; Pedro Ramon; Jose Salazar; Marcos Valera; and Luis Yaquis. Their families are not known.

The combined mission-pueblos among the Yuma Indians near the junction of the Gila and Colorado Rivers were established in late 1780. La Purisima Conception was first established, and shortly, the second, San Pedro y San Pablo, followed a few miles away. For many reasons, the Yumas believed they were being victimized and rose up in rebellion in July 1781. They killed the priests, settlers, and soldiers for the two settlements, then killed those who remained with Captain Rivera from the Expedition of 1781 (to settle Los Angeles and establish Santa Barbara Presidio).

The soldiers of the mission-pueblos who were killed were: Ensign Santiago Islas; Sergeant Jose/Juan de la Vega; Corporals: Juan Miguel Palomino; Pascual Rivera; Soldiers: Pedro Burquez; Gabriel/Javier Diaz; Manual Duarte; Juan Gallardo; Justo Grijalvh; Gabriel Lubque; Jose Ignacio Martinez; Juan Martinez; Cayetano Mesa; Bernardo Morales; Gabriel Romero; Faustino Sallalla; sMatia de la Vega; and Ignacio Zamora. Those soldiers who escaped were: Jose Pacheco; Miguel Antonio Romero; and Pedro Solares. All or nearly all of these soldiers had families, none now delineated. Those killed from the Expedition were Captain Fernando Javier de Rivera y Moncada*; Sergeant Juan Jose Robles*; Nicolas Beltran; Tomas Maria Camacho*; Pablo Victoriano Cervantes; Joaquin Espinosa*; Carlos Gallegos*; and Francisco Pena. Others who died during 1781/82, possibly some at Yuma, were Juan Angel Amarillas; Antonio Espinosa; sSJoaquin Lopez; Manuel Caneda; Joaquin Guerrero; Jose M. Guerrero; and Rafael Marquez.(Ref: Bancroft, op cit, p 363. The list was taken from Provincial State Papers, Benecia Military Toma III, pp 10, 22). Recruits who were killed at Yuma were Ascencio Alvarez*; Francisco Castro; Manuel Diaz; Antonio Pardo; and Josef Quijas. (Ref: provincial State papers, Benecia Military Toma II, pp 60-63.)

From the same Toma comes notes that recruits who deserted were Isidro German*, Prudencio Lopez, and Ygnacio Rochin. Other notes show show soldiers from the Sonora Presidios to be Ygnacio Lauro and Mateo de Soto. Also listed without caption as of 24 Oct 1781 were 16 soldiers, possibly from a contingent of recruits sent by Capt. Rivera to Loreto, thence on to California. These were: Josef Acuna; Guadalupe Alvarado; Andres Bojorquez; Josef Chamarro; Vicente Frias; Diego de Leon; Andres Martinez; Josef Domingo Mesa; Valentin Montano; Juan de Dios Murietta; Custodio Ocha; Xavier Romero; Matio de Soto; Juan Ygnacio Valencia*; Juan de Dios Villasenor; and Juan Josef Xelayal. Another list showing most of the above had additional recruit names of Gaspar Lopez; Juan Norberto Mejia; Pedro Jose Mejia; Javier Sepulveda; and Jose Maria Valarde.

The largest number of soldiers ever involved in Spanish California military operations involved three separate attempts to subdue the Yumas. Lt. Col Pedro Fages* led the Colorado River Expedition of 1781/82 and recovered most of the captives. He was joined by Captain Pedro Fueros/Tueros; Ensign Don Manuel Antonio Arbizu; Sergeants Juan Roriega; Miguel Palacios; Miguel Rivera; and Gaspar Tovar; and 100 soldiers from Presidios in Arizona and Sonora. Then, in early 1782, Fages led a group of 38 soldiers, with considerable livestock, through the Yuma country and on to San Gabriel. A coordinated expedition under Lt Col Felipe de Neve* then began from California and Sonora. The Yumas withdrew from the area and there was little action. Later, still another expedition from Sonora with 108 men under Capt. Jose Antonio Romeu attacked Yumas and killed many, but did not subdue them. The names of soldiers in these various expeditions have not been recovered.

Each mission had a military leader, usually a Corporal, with several soldiers, who protected the mission and assisted the priests in civil and church functions. A few soldiers had special skills which caused them to be in demand for service at missions without living in them. For example, Ignacio Vallejo was skilled in building irrigation systems. Others were skilled in carpentry and in trades. All these soldiers were paid from their own Presidio and should have been reported on the Presidio rosters. Mission records must be compared to Presidio rosters to determine if this was done.

Likewise, each pueblo had a military contingent, where the Corporal was in effect the Mayor and Clerk, as well as head guard for the Pueblo and its government supplies. For Los Angeles, Corporal Jose Vicente Feliz was the only person in the pueblo who could read and write. Pueblo records must also be compared to Presidio rosters.

In order to begin settling Alta California, Visitor-General Jose Galvez first had to establish a port to support operations. He selected San Blas and by 1769 had developed it into a harbor and ship-building center. (Ref: Bean, Walton and James J. Rawls, pp 20-21, California - An Interpretive History, Fifth Edition). San Blas was then the port and support base in Sinaloa for Alta California until the Americans took over.

During the Revolutionary War period, the San Blas Navy consisted of two armed frigates, the "Favorita" and the "Princesa," and three transport vessels, the "Santiago," "San Carlos," and the "San Antonio." Names of some of the officers are known, but the names of crew members have not been recovered.

By Feb 1779, the Spanish had learned of the voyages of English Captain James Cook in the Pacific and of his encursions into Spanish territory in Nootka Sound, which Cook had named Friendly Cove. The two armed frigates were outfitted to capture Captain Cook and to explore the northern reaches of Spanish territory. Lt Bodega y Quadra commanded the "Favorita," and Lt Ignacio Arteaga the "Princesa." Another officer was Lt Quiros y Miranda. They searched for Captain Cook without success, then explored as far north as latitude 60 degrees. (Ref: Sanchez, Joseph P. Spanish Bluecoats - The Catalonian Volunteers in Northwestern New Spain, 1767-1810, Chapter 6, pp 71-71. This author refers to Warren Cook: Flood Tide of Empires: Spain and the Pacific Northwest, p 93).

By July 1779, the frigates were back in San Francisco Bay, where they mapped part of the bay which had not been explored. They also had to stop so those who had come down with scurvy could recover. Their hospital tent in the San Francisco Presidio accidentally burned in September. In early October, an overland courier brought news of the War with England. Anticipating hostilities on the high seas, the frigates hastily departed for San Blas on 30 Oct 1779.

The "Santiago" also made a trip to San Francisco in July 1779, and several of its officers served as godfathers at the baptisms of native Indians on 6 July. Two officers were Captain Estevan Jose Martinez and Pilot Jose Tobar.

Because of the dangers to the Philippines from the War with England, the transports "San Carlos" and "San Antonio" were sent to Manila to give notice of the war and to deliver $300,000 for war preparations. (Ref: Bancroft, Hubert Howe, History of California, Vol I, 1542-1800, pp 328-331.

Bancroft in his "Annals of Baja California," noted that Governor Neve in his Regulations has authorized the numbers of naval specialists and the persons for the sloop. Bancroft mentioned the lighter, San Juan Nepomuceno, stating that the crew was held ready for any emergency. He also mentioned a second lighter.

ARIZONA PATRIOTS OF THE
TUCSON PRESIDIO

The Tucson Presidio was the only one in present-day Arizona during Spain's 1779-1783 War with England. There was also a Pima Company in the last year of the war. Several accounts of those present during that period have been found. The number of soldiers assigned to the Tucson Presidio ranged from 60 to 70. The names of those identified are shown below. There were other patriots assigned to the Yuma settlements which were abolished by the Yumas 17-19 Jul 1781. Still others helped in the Expeditions against the Yumas. The soldiers of the Tucson Presidio sometimes joined soldiers from California, Sonora, New Mexico, and Nuevo Vizcaya in various expeditions affecting Arizona.

The Loreto Presidio was the father to all the others in CA .It was the support base and message center for Alta California and frequently the capitol of the California Province.
