Florida Look-Ups by Trudy

GENERAL INFO:

TIMING: I generally go to the main Orlando Public Library to do look-ups about once a month, sometimes more often. It just depends on my schedule.

COST: Copies from microfilm cost me 25 cents each and I don't ask for reimbursement. I do ask that you pass the favor along to another genealogist when you are able. This will help the whole genealogy/family historian community in the long run. :-) If you really, really want to send money for my costs, I'd rather you make a small contribution to the American Red Cross. The hurricane victims need help far more than I need a few cents for doing a fellow genealogist a favor. OK? :-)

I will do the types of look-ups listed below for free as my time allows.

Obituaries (Orlando newspapers)

The library has Orlando newspaper microfilm starting in 1914, but not every issue in the early years. Please provide the person's name and date of death, at least the year, or a range of years they might have died. Month and day are helpful if you have them, but not necessary. If you can't find a death date, I will try to find them for you in the Florida Vital Records at the library, which start in 1877.

To find a death date, if you have an Ancestry.com subscription, they have the Florida Death Index from 1936 to 1998.

You can also check the Social Security Death Index for a death date, but please be aware that the "Last Residence" is only where the death benefit check was sent, which may or may not have been the location where the person died. SSDI can be searched for free at RootsWeb, or Steve Morse's site, among others.

Death Index (Florida Vital Records)

The Orlando Public Library has the Florida Vital Record index for deaths from 1877 through 1997. Please provide as much of the following info as you have: Full name, birth date, age at death, approximate death date.

Marriage Index (Florida Vital Records)

The marriage index is from 1927 to 1997. Please provide as much of the following info as you have: Full names of both the bride and groom, the bride's maiden name, birth dates for both, approximate marriage date.

Divorce Index (Florida Vital Records)

The divorce index is also from 1927 to 1997. Please provide as much of the following info as you have: Full names of both husband and wife, the wife's maiden name, birth dates for both, approximate marriage and/or divorce date.
