INFORMATION:
“Lyman
Tracy’s father?” by Elaine Johnson
“I
went to Salt Lake City recently and concentrated on early land records in
Illinois in an effort to fill in some of the years in the life of Lyman Tracy
before he married in 1825. Lyman and Anna’s was the first
recorded
marriage in Fulton County, Illinois, less than one month after it was
organized. When I was a
less
experienced researcher, I assumed that meant he had just arrived in the area
from his native New
York
and was among the first settlers there. I hadn’t done more than dabble with the
problem since.
Recently
I re-thought that assumption. Pike County was the parent county to Fulton,
Schuyler and
Hancock
Counties—all places we knew Lyman had lived.
I
began in Pike County. There is one deed recorded there with Lyman Tracy’s name
on it. He sold land on
November
7, 1820 in Madison County, Illinois. Madison County was the parent county of
Pike. It was
recorded
in June 1822, after Pike was organized and so was recorded in the new county.
The land was
described
as 160 acres located in the Military Bounty Lands. 160 acres was the amount
given to veterans
of
the War of 1812. Lyman was eighteen at the very end of the war. Could he be a
veteran? Is that why
he
came to Illinois? The transaction was witnessed by a man named TRACY whose
first name I can’t
make
out. [insert your favorite swear word here] (Pike County, Illinois, Deeds Book
3, page 352, US/Can
Film
#1313480)
I
scoured the early Madison County deed books looking for the deed recording when
he bought or was
granted
that land. All those I saw in passing mentioned the place of residence and
sometimes military unit
of
the veteran. I REALLY wanted to find that deed. Nothing. I began to notice that
the original books
weren’t
located in Madison County. Those deeds relating to the current county had been
transcribed and
were
now typed copies. Using the legal description of the land I located it in
Hancock County. I found the
deed
record in Hancock County. It said, "This indenture made the tenth day of
June In the year of our
Lord
One Thousand Eight hundred & twenty Between John T. Doubleday of Chenango
County of
Broome
& State of New York of the first part & Lyman Tracy of town County
& State aforesaid of the
second
part . . ." (Hancock County, Illinois Deeds Vol 3 Pg 55 US/Can Film
#0954191)
Chenango,
Broome, New York!!!!!! I went rushing off to New York. (Librarily speaking of
course.) There is
a
deed in Broome County dated June 10, 1820 in which Lyman Tracy sold a Chenango
town lot to one
John
T. Doubleday. (Broome County, New York, Deeds Book 7 page 244, US/Can Film
#573085) The
legal
description included the information that it was the same land sold by a Dr.
Barnes to a Mr. Palmer
who
sold it to CHRISTOPHER Tracy who sold it to Lyman.
In
the June 27, 1818 deed in which Christopher sold the town lot to Lyman,
Christopher’s residence was
listed
as Union, Tioga County, New York. (Broome County, New York, Deeds Book 6, pages
235-236, US/
Can
Film #0573084) A little research told me that Tioga was the parent county of
Broome. [Two days
before
that deed Christopher Tracy sold land to Elias Tracy. (Broome County, New York,
Deeds Book 6,
pages
230, US/Can Film #0573084)] In 1853 Lyman sold his land in Schuyler County to
his son. Is this
and
earlier example of the same thing? Is Christopher the father of Lyman? When I
looked at a map of
the
area I found something intriguing. Just inside Broome County near Tioga, is a
Tracy Creek and Tracy
Creek
State Forest. Hmm.
In
the 1800 census, in Tioga County, New York, is a Christopher Tracy. Other members
of the household
include
a female of his age group, three younger males and one younger female. Were the
boys Silas,
Lyman
& Elias?
On
September 13, 1820 Lyman Tracy sold land in Lisle, Broome, New York. The deed
was recorded
August
15, 1821 by the witness, Silas Tracy. (Broome County, New York, Deeds Book 7
page 478, US/
Can
Film #573084) Presumably, Silas recorded it because Lyman had already gone
west. From the 1825
New
York state census it looks like Silas Tracy of Chenango, Broome, New York, was
a few years older
than
our Lyman. Maybe a brother?
1820
Timeline for Lyman Tracy
June
10: sold land in Chenango, Broome, New York; June 10: bought land in Illinois
(probably sight
unseen)
September
13: sold land in Lisle, Broome, New York; Late Sept or early Nov: probable
arrival in Illinois
November
7: sold land in Madison County, Illinois
There
are also several deeds bearing Christopher’s name in Broome County. I didn’t
have time to look in
Tioga
for deeds. The number of deeds recorded in both Lyman and Christopher’s names
makes it appear
they
were in the business of land speculation. A mortgage recorded in the deed books
when Lyman lent
$40.96
to someone adds to the impression. (Madison County, Illinois, Deed Book 12 page
158, US/Can
film
#484054)
Last
year someone whose name I have lost tried to tell me Lyman was the son of
Thomas Rix Tracy. He
did
have a son named Lyman, born in New York about the same time as our Lyman who
died about the
same
time as our Lyman. Thomas is also listed once in the deed records for Broome
County. However,
that
Lyman Tracy moved to Bowling Green, Ohio, with the rest of his extended family,
lived there and died
there”.

OBIT:
DEATH OF LEONARD R. TRACY
Was
a Veteran of the Civil War and a Former
Resident of Schuyler County
The
subject Of this sketch will be
remembered by many of the older residents
of this county. He was a brother-in-law of
G.R. Settles, of this city.
Leonard
R. Tracy was born October
11,1827, in Fulton county, Illinois, and
died
in St. Joseph, Mo., February 21, 1910, at
the ripe old age of 82 years, 4 months and
10
days.
The
first half of his life was spent mostly
in Browning townnship. He was a man of
almost unlimited strength and endurance.
He
also had the energetic spirit within him
to
put this physical power into action and no
task however difficult, seemed too real
for
him to undertake, and all though he was
not
quick to take action, when he undertook a
thing it was with that tenacity that knew
no
failure.
He
was one of Schuyler county's hardy
pioneers and did his part bye converting a
portion of Browning township from its
priminative(sic)state into one of
usefulness. He
had a wide acquaintanceship in those days;
in fact, it would have been a hard matter
to
find a man that did not know "Len
Tracy."
He was of a family of patriots; full of
love
for the old flag and in 1861, when his
country was in peril and in need of the
assistance of all brave men, he with his
two
brothers, Perry and Thomas, shouldered his
musket and for-three years served his
country as a volunteer soldier, and while
he
was "only a private" no braver
man ever
led men to victory than he. At the
expiration of the three years he re-enlisted
under Gen. Hancock and served to the
close of the war.
Shortly
before the term of his first
enlistment expired he addressed a letter
to
to his sister, Penina Settles. We here
present a part of it:
"Our
army is doing well in the east and
the re-election of "Old Abe"
still do more
towards restoring peace than five thousand
men in the field.
The
South's only hope is in the defeat of
Lincoln and that's all the copperheads and
peace faction want. They are all traitors
and
go against the welfare of this government.
But
I think we can run the machine safe f the
Lord is willing, and I am sure the Lord is
with
us in this fight; so I think our Union is
safe.
The truer democrats have denounced these
peace brawlers and copperheads for there
are
only too sides, patriots and traitors.
This
government must be preserved at all
hazards,
and all we ask of the Tory clan is to
return to
their sworn allegiance to this government
of
the United States of America and we will
say
peace, but not until then. We don't want a
peace such as Valandingham is willing to
put
up with. Peace on any terms. We want a
peace that is a permanent one and for this
we
risk our lives, and that is the kind we will
have if Old Abe is elected, and I feel
confident he will be. I may go in again
after while if feel that my country needs
my services. I know the army must be kept
up and I don't intend to be behind.
Farewell,
my dear brother and sister. I
remain
your brother L. R. Tracy."
After
the war he returned to his home and
continued farming in Browning township a
few years when he located in Arkansas
where
he remained until a few years previous to
his death when he removed to St. Joe. A
stroke of paralysis caused his death.
He leaves a wife and a large family of
grown
sons and daughters. Three sisters also
survive him -Minda Mitchell, of this
county, Mary A. Moore, of Cheyenne, Wyo.,
and Cynthia A. Skiles, of Holdredge, Neb.

Grandma and Grandpa Woody lived on a farm way out in the sticks
between
Ray and Vermont, my Mom and Dad lived at this same place when I was
born,
the roads were nearly impassable in bad weather back then, the roads are better
now
and the house is still there but someone has attached a mobile home to it. I
can
remember
going out to Grandma Woodys house with my Grandma David, in the
kitchen
there was this big black stove that you put wood in and cooked on, Grandma
Woody
made the best donuts and molasses cookies on/in that stove. I think the
house
only had 4 or 5 rooms. One of my most vivid memories of going to Grandma
Woodys_is
the time we went to help Grandma kill chickens, it scared the heck_out of
me
to see my two little whitehaired grandmas rip the head off_chickens! Grandma
Woody
sometimes smoked a corncob pipe too, now when I_think of that I think of
Mammy
Yokum from Lil' Abner. Grandma Woody felland broke her hip, I don't

when this was but I never saw her_walk after that, not to long after this

round
eyeglasses that made her eyes_look HUGE and she had snow white hair that
she
wore in a bun but at_night she took her hair down and it was almost to her
waist.
Speaking
of_hair Grandma Woodruff told me that she used to have red hair and yes
I_did
have red hair, now its kinda yuckgrey. My daughter Diana has red_hair and my
grandson
Dylan has the most beautiful copper colored hair_that shines like a new

in the sunlight.I guess red hair is_hereditary. (as told by Kay Fair, 2002)

was brought to the Graham hospital here by a
passing, motorist where he died an hour
after arrival. Both legs were badly
mangled and death was attributed to

Driving
north toward Bryant about 2 o'clock
this afternoon, Tracy, his vision
apparently
obscured by smoke from a grass
fire along the Burlington railroad
tracks, which run parallel with the
hi-way crashed head-on with a
car driven by John Smith of
Bryant. When he emerged from
his car, he was struck down by a
third auto, northbound, driven by

GILDEROY
SETTLES, one of the largest landowners in Schuyler county and a man of great
force and
integrity
of character, is the subject of the following biography. It is fitting that the
history of such men be
preserved
to the coming generations, that they may have some idea of the vicissitudes and
privations
and
trials which beset the path of those sturdy pioneers which prepared the way for
the onward march of
progress.
To this worthy band belongs Gilderoy Settles, who was born in Fulton county,
Illinois,
November
14, 1837; one of seven children: Polly Ann, Gilderoy, David J., Serena, Penina,
Nancy and
Josiah.
His father, William Settles, was a native of Tennessee, and emigrated from that
State to Illinois,
becoming
a pioneer of Fulton county; there he was united in marriage to Peggy Carlock, a
daughter of
Abraham
and Mary A. Carlock; he spent more than fifty years in Fulton county, but died
in Morgan county,
Illinois;
his wife died in Fulton county; their son Gilderoy was reared to the occupation
of a farmer, and
remained
under the parental roof and guidance until he was twenty years of age; he then
began to face
the
world laying the foundation of the fortune which has since attended his path.
He rented land, as he
had
no capital to invest, and managed in this way until 1859, when he made his
first purchase of eighty
acres,
at $10 per acre; there was a log cabin on the place, and this was the extent of
the improvements,
but
it was truly a home, the first he could call his own. Mr. Settles was occupying
this quiet little place,
when
in March, 1865, he enlisted in Company I, Third Illinois Cavalry; he joined the
regiment at
Springfield,
and did garrison duty until October of the same year; he was then honorably
discharged,
returned
to his home, and resumed the pursuit of agriculture. The following year he
bought another farm
in
the same township, and afterward sold the farm he had first purchased; he
resided in Browning
township
until 1871, and then removed to land he had bought in Frederick township; this
was his home
until
1884 when he bought the farm on which he now lives; this tract consists of 204
acres in an
advanced
state of cultivation and improved with excellent buildings; besides this Mr.
Settles owns another
farm
of 200 acres in the same township, 120 acres in Oakland township, and 160 acres
in Clark county,
Kansas.
In 1857 he was united in marriage to Miss Penina Tracy, who was born in Fulton
county, May 24,
1835,
one of the eight children of her parents: Perry, Leonard R., Mary A., Thomas
C., Penina A., Minerva,
Arminda
and Cynthia A. Her father, Lyman Tracy, was born in the State of New York, and
came to Illinois
when
a young man; he was one of the early settlers of Fulton county, lived there a
few years, and then
removed
to Missouri; at the end of seven years he came to Schuyler county, and settled
in Browning
township
where he passed the remainder of his days; his wife, Annie Carlock, died on the
farm in
Browning
township. Mr. and Mrs. Settles are the parents of six children: Leander,
Florentine, Logan,
Doran,
Charles and Orpha. Politically Mr. Settles affiliates with the Republican
party.

OBITUARIES
for the year 1891 April 2
"SMITH,
MRS. MINERVA died on Wed. March 25,
1891. at Decatur. Ill .She recently came from her
home
in
Ogden, Utah, to have a tumor removed,
which was done on Tuesday, and next day she died.
She was met at Decatur on Monday by her
sister, MRS. G. R. SETTLES, who was with her when she
died
,
and accompanied the remains to Rushville
arriving on the noon train Thursday.
She was laid away in
Rushville's beautiful cemetery on Saturday
last. MRS. SMITH was born in Fulton County, ILL, Jan. 23,
1837,
which would make her 54 years, 2 months
and 2 days old.
When
quite young she went with her parents to Newton County, Missouri where they
resided about seven
years
when
they returned to this county, where she remained until after the close of
the war, when she went west.
She was in Salt Lake City for awhile, but,
not liking the Mormons she went to Wyoming Territory.
Being a woman of good judgment and
business qualitites she soon became owner of over a thousand
acres
of land, which she used as a ranch.
She
married, but it was not long until she became a widow. After a few years she
married again, but was
left
a widow
a
second time. She still managed the ranch,
keeping it well stocked with horses.
She also bought quite a
lot
of town property.
Time passed on and her health began to
fail. Thinking it might be beneficial,
she rented her ranch and
went
to Ogdon, Utah, bought a property and
went to housekeeping. A few months ago
she married WM.
SMITH,
who survives her. She soon discovered,
however, that the cause of her trouble was a tumor and
began
doctoring for it. But finding no
relief, she concluded to go to Decatur
and have it removed with the
knife,
which resulted in her death. She
leaves one daughter, four sisters and
two brothers. Her
daughter
is in Wyoming. She was a sister of MRS. G. R. SETTLES, MRS. WM. MITCHELL, and

INFORMATION:
Franklin
A. Sanders was born 11 May 1840 in Lorain county, Ohio, near the town of
Birmingham.
His parents were Juda and Sarah Parsons Sanders. They sometimes
used
the nicknames Joseph and Sally. He was their second son. They lived in Lorain
county
at least until 1847. They moved to Wisconsin sometime after that. They moved
to
Independence township, Jasper county, Iowa, in 1855. Both the 1850 and 1860
federal
census missed the family. Possibly they were moving those years.
Descendants
of Juda's brothers and sister still live in central Iowa.
Frank
enlisted in the 10th Iowa Volunteer Infantry
22 May 1861 at Newton, Jasper
county,
Iowa. He was a Private in Company I, 10th Iowa, during the entire Civil War. He
was
not wounded in over four years of fighting. Frank was discharged 15 August 1865
at
Little Rock, Arkansas. When filling out military pension questionnaires in
later years
Frank
was asked if he had any permanent marks or scars on his person. He replied,
"
My
full name on my left arm." Perhaps as identification if he fell during the
war. Frank
always
signed his name as Frank A. Sanders.
He
returned to Iowa and used his war pay stamp to purchase a farm in Eden
township,
Marshall
county, where he lived until 1871. His parents and two youngest siblings lived
with
him on that farm at the time of the 1870 federal census.
Frank
and his parents and his youngest sister and brother moved to Kansas in 1871.
They
had a homestead in Glen Elder township, Mitchell county. Frank stated in his
pension
records that he lived in Kansas until 1878 and then moved to Wyoming. He still
lived
in Kansas with his parents when the 1880 federal census was taken. Some time
after
that his parents returned to Iowa and he went to Wyoming.
Frank
married Dora D. Covey Brandt 15 December 1885 at Dale Creek, Albany county,
Wyoming.
The marriage record lists both as residents of Dale Creek. He was 45 years
old.
She was a divorcée with five children from her previous marriage. The family
moved
to Casper in Natrona county. Frank and Dora had four children together. Ada
May
born in 1888, Arvilla Ione born in 1891, Perry Milo born in 1894, and Frank
Dewey
born
27 June 1898 and died 18 Nov 1898. The baby was buried in the Freeland
cemetery. The Sanders family lived in Freeland for
many years. They are listed in
Freeland
in the 1900 & 1910 federal census.
Frank
died at home Rural Route 1, Idaho Falls, Bonneville county, Idaho, 10
September
1914. The cause of death listed was "general debility & old age."
There was
no
doctor in attendance. He was buried the next day in the Rose Hill cemetery. The
following
day, the 12th, the death certificate was filled out. The informant was Dora
Sanders
of Idaho Falls. It was also signed by the undertaker who wrote an additional
notation
that he had been buried in the "old lots." The cemetery kept their
records at
that
time on small loose papers that were later inscribed into books. Record of the
location
of Frank's grave has been lost and there is no gravestone.

Oakland
Village
On
the 23rd day of June, 1869, this village was laid out upon the S. E. ¼ of
section 26, by William
Seachrist,
and surveyed and platted by J. W. Watts, the county surveyor. The town was
built along the
base
of the hill, and presents a picturesque appearance, as one approaches it. The
buildings are neat
and
comfortable. It has a station upon the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad,
Rushville branch,
and
offers to the capitalist seeking an investment, a manufacturing site rarely
equaled. An inexhaustible
supply
of fine timber, coal, building stone, potter’s clay, water in abundance at all
seasons, and a mill site
not
surpassed anywhere. The first house built, where the town now stands was the
rude log cabin of
William
Lamb, one of the pioneers of the township. The first store erected before the
town was platted,
was
a small one-story frame structure, built by James Skiles, who removed his stock
of goods and the
post-office
there from Oil Hill; when the name of the office was changed to that of Ray,
Mr. Skiles
continued
to act as postmaster. The business firm became known as Skiles & Tracy.
This was in the
spring
of 1869. Richard Ashcraft kept the first hotel. Garret Roberts, and Hoops &
Pemberton had the first
tile
factory. Snowden & Aten built the first mill, a water power saw mill on
Cedar creek, when the town was
first
located. The first church was erected in 1876, by all the different
congregations, and is known as the
Union
church. It is a neat frame building, and is under the control of the M. E.
congregation, of which the
Rev.
Ralph Patterson is pastor. All denominations have the privilege of holding
religious services beneath
its
roof. The first school house was completed in the spring of 1879, the old one
previously used being a
half
a mile south of the village. Mr. Nicholas Pittenger was the first teacher, the
first session commencing
in
the fall of 1879. It is a neat and commodious building, furnished with improved
furniture and apparatus,
and
a term of seven months’ duration is maintained.

Ill., and was
born
on Christmas Day, 1839. His father, Moses Skiles, was a native of Missouri, and
emigrated to Illinois
at
an early day. He was a soldier in the Black Hawk war, and was a man of
prominence and influence in
the
community where he resided. He was justice of the peace for many years, and was
elected to various
other
local offices. He was a farmer by occupation, a hard-working, industrious man.
He died in 1877. His
wife,
who bore the maiden name of Mary Luttrell, died in 1842. Both were members of
the United
Brethren
church._James M. Skiles, the subject of this sketch, was one of a family of
eleven children and
started
out to "hoe his own row" at the age of seventeen. His opportunities
for obtaining an education
were
very limited and he had to confine himself to the advantages offered in the
district schools. He
worked
on a farm until March 22, 1862, when he enlisted in the Third Missouri Calvary.
His service was
rendered
mainly within the borders of Missouri, where many of the most noted skirmishes
of the war took
place.
He was a participant in the famous skirmish at Hartsville, Mo., where great
efforts were exerted on
both
sides. He served as corporal for sometime previous to being mustered out, and
followed after such
distinguished
leaders as Generals Warren, Steele and Merrill. He was mustered out at Little
Rock, Ark., in
March
1865, making his term of actual service three years. Soon after his return from
the war, Mr. Skiles
purchased
a stock of general merchandise and kept a store at Ray Station, Schuiyler
county, Ill. He was
actively
engaged in mercantile business at this point for about seven years, when he
disposed of his
store
and decided to seek a home n the West. Mr. Skiles was among the first
homesteaders in Laird
township,
Phelps county, Nebr. It was early in the spring of 1879 when he first began
prospecting for a
claim,
and, as might be expected, his countenance wore a doubtful but earnest
expression. He found
himself
out on a boundless prairie almost uninhabited, and where the antelope and deer
roamed at will.
There
yet existed a doubt concerning the future of this particular portion, which was
once known as the "

American Desert." In appearance the country was a rolling prairie,
beautiful to behold, but difficult to
understand.
This township is located on the Divide between the Platte and Republican
rivers, and
consequently
it is from two hundred to two hundered and fifty feet to water. This fact
discouraged many
who
preferred to locate near the streams. This, however, did not prevent Mr. Skiles
from selecting a
choice
quarter section and locating on it. He had faith in the country, and set about
immediately to kindle
the
fire of civilization. He built a sod house, and began breaking the sod
preparatory to planting his crop.
He
came with the determination to endure the many hardships and privations
incident to the life of the
early
settler, in order that he might have a home for himself and family in years to
come._"Mr. Skiles
married
April 20, 1865, the lady whom he selected for a partner being Miss Cynthia
Tracy, a native of
Schuyler
county, Ill. She was born April 10, 1848. Her parents were Lyman and Annie
(Carlock) Tracy,
the
former a native of New York, and the latter of Tennessee. Her father died in
1853, and her mother in
1882.
There were ten children in the Tracy family, of whom Mrs. Skiles was the
youngest." __"To Mr.
and
Mrs. Skiles have been born nine children, as follows: Mary Ann, born Feb. 23,
1867; Thomas Logan,
born
Oct. 2, 1868; Agustus, born Dec. 13, 1870; Rose, born Jan. 31, 1873; Dora, born
May 19, 1875;
Frederick,
born Oct. 11, 1877; Luther B., born Feb. 15, 1880; Arcadia, born March 11,
1882; and James,
born
Dec. 9, 1885."_
Politically,
Mr. Skiles is a republican, but he is not a professional politician. He has,
however, filled various
offices
with credit to himself and to the entire satisfaction of his constituents. He
served one term on the
county
board of supervisors, and has been justice of the peace for several years. He
is a member of the
Farmers
Alliance and one of th its most ardent advocates. His once barren homestead is
now under a
good
state of cultivation and yields an abundant harvest each year.
