We had 4 authors nominated for the Dal Coger Memorial Hall of Fame Award. Those nominees are :
(All of the Hall of Fame nominees are eligible for renomination next year, as this is an Award for achievement and is not limited to one year. )

The Winner and new inductee into the Dal Coger Memorial Hall of Fame is

MICHAEL REISIG for The New Madrid Run and other works.

Mr. Reisig was invited to attend Midsouthcon, but was unable to make it. We hope to have him in Memphis sometime in 2005 for a MSSFFA-sponsored event, or at Midsouthcon 24 in 2006.

2005 Darrell Award for Best Midsouth NOVEL

Nominees this year for Best Midsouth Novel are:

The Jury had a very hard choice this year in the Novel category, due to the unusual number of nominees, but we did eventually reach the following conclusions:

Each Honorable Mention recipient was given a Certificate and was invited to attend the Banquet as a guest of MSSFFA.

The Finalists for Best Midsouth Novel are

Russ Evans was present and read a brief excerpt from his novel; he received a Finalist Certificate and was a guest of MSSFFA at the Banquet. Excerpts from the other Finalist Novels were read by Cullen Johnson (Fan Guest), Michael Sheard (Toastmaster), and Sylvia Cox (from the Darrell Awards Jury). The Certificates for these other Finalists will be shipped to them.

The 2005 Darrell Award Winners for Best Midsouth Novel are:
First Runner Up: Blue Dahlia by Nora Roberts and

2005 Darrell Award Winner for Best Midsouth Novel:
      The Rebel by Jack Dann

Remarks received in advance from Mr. Dann were read to the attendees; his plaque will be shipped to him.

Best Midsouth NOVELLA

This year we added a Novella category to better fit the length of some of the nominated stories. We had 3 stories that were placed into this category by the Jury during its deliberations:

Elizabeth Donald read an excerpt from her novella; Lanette Currington was not present and the Darrell Awards Jury Chairman apologized for not having copies of her novellas with him to read from.

All 3 of these stories were deemed to be good enough to be considered Finalists. The winners are:

First Runner Up: Moonstoned by Lanette Currington and

2005 Darrell Award Winner for Best Midsouth Novella
        Nocturnal Urges by Elizabeth Donald

Ms. Donald received her plaque and spoke for a few moments. Certificates for the Finalist and First Runner-Up will be sent to Ms. Currington.

BEST OTHER WORK

This year, after moving all the e-fiction to the novel, novella or short story categories, we only had movies and comics to consider as Other Works. No movies were nominated and the comics that were nominated comprised 4 parts of one story. So, the Jury decided to honor Bloodstream, issues 1-4 by Adam Shaw and Penny Register-Shaw with an Honorable Mention for Best Midsouth Other Work. Ms. Shaw was present to receive their Certificate and say a few words. We hope to work with the Midsouth Comic Artists group and others to find more worthy, eligible Other Works nominees in the next year.

SHORT STORIES
Now, as most of you know, Barbara Gatewood is my wife. I could not be more proud of her for all the things she has done for fandom and all the work she has done to make our lives together worthwhile. Yet, she went beyond my expectations and took up writing a few years ago. Last year, one of her stories was published in the Best of Memphis anthology. As it is a horror story by a local author, it was eligible for the Darrell Awards and was nominated, along with several others from that book and elsewhere.
So, to borrow a term from the legal profession, I recused myself from the Short Story part of the Jury this year. Whenever it came time to even discuss the short stories, I asked the rest of the Jury to leave the room or I left. I probably would have had to do this anyway, as I know several of those whose works were nominated this year. But, I want everyone to understand that SYLVIA COX was in charge of the Short Story part of the Jury and gets the credit for these these results, which are in no way due to my being the Chairman of the overall Darrell Awards Jury.

Having said all that, the nominees for Best Midsouth Short Story are:

Honorable Mentions for Best Short Story this year go to:

Angelia Sparrow received her Honorable Mention Certificate at the Awards Banquet; the others will be sent to them.

The Finalists for Best Midsouth Short Story this year are:

Kenneth Yarbrough received his Finalist Certificate; FeLicia Elam’s Certificate will be delivered to her.

The Winners for Best Midsouth Short Story are :
First Runner Up: The Journals of Dr. Albert Dewey by Barbara Gatewood

2005 Darrell Award Winner for Best Midsouth Short Story:
Elvis In the Attic by Catherine M. Morrison

Barbara Gatewood received her First Runner-Up Certificate at the Awards Banquet. The plaque for Ms. Morrison has been shipped to her.
