Best Midsouth NOVELLA
This year we added a Novella category to better fit the length of
some of the nominated stories. We had 3 stories that were placed into this
category by the Jury during its deliberations:
-
Eternal Passion by Lanette Currington (AmberQuill Press)
-
Moonstoned by Lanette Currington (Ellora’s Cave) and
-
Nocturnal Urges by Elizabeth Donald (Ellora’s Cave).
Elizabeth Donald read an excerpt from her novella; Lanette Currington
was not present and the Darrell Awards Jury Chairman apologized for not
having copies of her novellas with him to read from.
All 3 of these stories were deemed to be good enough to be considered
Finalists. The winners are:
First Runner Up: Moonstoned by Lanette
Currington and
2005 Darrell Award Winner for Best Midsouth Novella
Nocturnal Urges
by Elizabeth Donald
Ms. Donald received her plaque and spoke for a few moments. Certificates
for the Finalist and First Runner-Up will be sent to Ms. Currington.
BEST OTHER WORK
This year, after moving all the e-fiction to the novel,
novella or short story categories, we only had movies and comics to consider
as Other Works. No movies were nominated and the comics that were nominated
comprised 4 parts of one story. So, the Jury decided to honor Bloodstream,
issues 1-4 by Adam Shaw and Penny Register-Shaw
with
an Honorable Mention for Best Midsouth Other Work.
Ms. Shaw was present to receive their Certificate and say a few words.
We hope to work with the Midsouth Comic Artists group and others to find
more worthy, eligible Other Works nominees in the next year.
SHORT STORIES
Now,
as most of you know, Barbara Gatewood is my wife. I could not be more proud
of her for all the things she has done for fandom and all the work she
has done to make our lives together worthwhile. Yet, she went beyond my
expectations and took up writing a few years ago. Last year, one of her
stories was published in the Best of Memphis anthology. As
it is a horror story by a local author, it was eligible for the Darrell
Awards and was nominated, along with several others from that book and
elsewhere.
So,
to borrow a term from the legal profession, I recused myself from the Short
Story part of the Jury this year. Whenever it came time to even discuss
the short stories, I asked the rest of the Jury to leave the room or I
left. I probably would have had to do this anyway, as I know several of
those whose works were nominated this year. But, I want everyone to understand
that SYLVIA COX was in charge of the Short Story part of the Jury and gets
the credit for these these results, which are in no way due to my being
the Chairman of the overall Darrell Awards Jury.
