The ties that bind

IGI

I deliberated a considerable amount of time on whether or not to include IGI records on each person. I have chosen to include them in order to assist LDS researchers, and since many entries in the IGI have been extracted from primary source documents, these entries are of worth.

You can go to the familysearch web site to look up IGI entries.

IGI Batch Numbers

Knowing the source of an IGI submission can help you decide how much credibility to attach to the entry. There are three types of entries:

1) Temple records kept on persons who were living and submitted their own information;
2) Extracted records (done by volunteers under supervision of the Church and with tight standards);
3) Submissions by individual members based on their own research.

On extracted records, each primary record is extracted 3 different times by 3 different people and any discrepancies are then examined to see which is correct. This ensures that we have pretty good accuracy on extracted records. Extracted IGI records generally are pretty accurate.

On member-submitted records
. Pre-computer era, the Church required that only one source document be used for any submission of a relative. Each birth/christening or marriage was submitted as an individual entry. Therefore, you may find several IGI entries for the same person with differing data, depending upon the source document which was used (birth record, christening record, family bible, etc.) Also, there are lots of human errors as some people are more diligent than others at accuracy and completeness. Since computerization of records, the Church asks for information to be submitted on family group records with the most complete information that is available. This provides more possibilities for accuracy as a diligent researcher can use several sources to show the information correctly. It also gives more room for error as sloppy researchers will estimate/assume more information.

Codes for IGI Batch Number prefixes:

A, L, M17, M18, T0, T90, 69409: Temple Records, (limited access). M17 and M18 list sealing date and place, not marriage date and place.

C: Extracted birth, christening or marriage record.

E: Replace E with M and find M batch number in Index.

J, K, M (except M17 and M18), P: Extracted birth, christening or marriage record.

T5: Just above the IGI entry with T5 you will find a nearly identical IGI entry with a different batch number. Use that batch number instead.

725, 745, 754: Extracted indexes, usually with no more information.

744: Extracted birth, christening or marriage record. F: Submitted by Church member. (some information may be estimated or added).

T96: Submitted by Church member. (correction to an existing record).

T998, T9990, all-digit (such as 8434961): Submitted by Church member. For all-digit entries, the first two digits of the Batch number are the last two digits of the year it was submitted (8434951 was submitted in 1984).

H: Latter-day Saint Deceased Membership Records ( there is no submitter).

6949405 through 6949426: Index to LDS membership records compiled by Minnie Margetts. Microfilm available.
