Chuck-A-Burger Lives On!

Chuck-A-Burger had announced its plans to  shut its doors at the Overland location the end of 2007 because they lost their lease.

Special promotions were offered like bring back 39 cent hamburgers one last time, all in their preparation of closing. Then Santa Claus appeared to bring the best present possible to employees and patrons of this famous eatery. Ron Stille announced he had bought the property!  They were back in business again. Barbecue burger with slaw  lives on.

A lot of us from Wellston went to their first location at Page and Pennsylvania. Some of us even worked there - or met our spouses there.

News reporter Ruth Ezell aired a story about Chuck A Burger before they renewed their lease. The video features some neat pictures of cruising from the late 50s to the present. Maybe you are featured ~ VIEW_ YouTube Viedo

The Airway Drive-In, 10634 St. Charles Rock Road, had two screens, opening in 1949. It had a capacity of holding 1,000 cars. It remained open until the mid 80s when drive-ins fell out of favor with their patrons.

However, the neon 1950s cheerleader with her baton still blinks as she now invites passersby into a shopping center. The sign has become one of several such landmarks in the St. Louis area.

The St. Ann Four Screen Drive-In, 10425 St. Charles Rock Road, opened in June 1951, operated by Arthur Theatres, also with a capacity of 1000 cars. It was located just a few blocks from the Airway Drive-In behind some retail stores that lined the Rock Road. The only thing visible from the Rock Road was the large marquee and the entrance that led to the theatre. St. Ann Drive-In was the first big multi-screen in the St. Louis area.

When Arthur Theatres went bankrupt, Wehrenberg took over operations of the St. Ann, putting it in direct competition with its own Airway Drive-In. The St. Ann usually played the same double bill program on two screens leaving you with a choice of two programs.   Both drive-ins were closed in the 1980s and later demolished making way for a shopping center.

Once there were many, now they are few, but that doesn't stop them from meeting each month for brunch. The class of '42 and '43 started this tradition in 1992 after their 50th reunion and plan to keep it up for as long as they can.

When they started there were more than 40 alumni meeting each month. Since then the total has dropped due to sickness or death.

I WAS ACTUALLY IN THE CLASS OF '67, should of be been in '66, but I had too much fun in third grade... and then, things changed.  I learned a lot that year from Ms. Bishop, she made me excel in math, bless her heart, she was a good teacher. We also had to learn were Hodiamont Ave. was, since that was the boundary, to the east. So much for that, do you remember skating at The Rink above the Western Auto in Wellston. I can remember playing spin the bottle at Sherry Wetzelle's House. 'Old', Charlie Lambert and a few other's. We use to walk to the other side of town, 'across' "Easton Ave." I have great memories of my youth! Catch you later. Mike Cole, aka Michael Cole, aka Mickey Cole, and as an older person, Dean Cole. Welcome home to any of my fellow classmates and/or their partners. May those we have lost rest in peace forever. DEAN/Army/Grunt/'69"

To the Flashlight Team: The March issue is absolutely outstanding. Consider inviting Frank Clark to Reunion 2009 as a special guest of honor representing the Clark family. I leave you with these thoughts:

It is the Soldier, not the reporter, Who has given us Freedom of the Press .
It is the Soldier, not the poet, Who has given Freedom of Speech.
It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer, Who has given us the Freedom to Demonstrate.
It is the Soldier, not the lawyer, Who has given us the Right to a Fair Trial; And it is the Soldier- who salutes the flag- Who serves the flag, and Whose coffin is draped by the flag-Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

QUIZ: How many steps does the guard take during his walk across the tomb of the Unknowns (Soldiers) and why??

 alumni news and projects

We welcome contributions each month, so send us your story. It might be a story about a favorite teacher or classmate who is no longer with us but who made a difference in your life or it may be a short story of general interest.  We will select one short story monthly for publication.  This months selected feature story is from:   Bob Coates '52

I was quite surprised to find Wellston High has an Alumni and Reunion committee. Looking at the Flashlights old pictures; and new, brought back so many memories. At this age memories are very dear to all of us. Seeing a picture of my first wife Flora Winder and my first "Crush" Francis Clayton, reminded me just how good looking they are; Francis you still have  a nice smile. Learning that my mate, Doris Akins, and my early playmates, Joseph, and Kenneth Carpenter, are no longer with us was a shock. Seeing pictures of Bill Voos, then and now reminded me of how much of a good moral role model he was as my "Den Chief" in Cub Scouts and latter in Boy Scouts. [MORE]

April showers bring May Flowers!

Something interesting!

Here's a tip that will make filling up your car a little easier. Did you know if the gas gage is located on the right side of your dash fill up on the right of your car? If the gage is located on the left, then you would fill up on the left.

The Trustees met on March 13th, finalizing the Alumni Newsletter, which will be mailed to all alumni in April.

Other matters discussed were alumni Bi-laws (which have not been finalized) and ideas for a fundraiser. President Mary Kay Parker '56 suggested a 'Silent Auction". The trustees agreed they thought it had merit and would be a fun for the Friday night mixer.

The Embassy Suites are now taking reservations for reunion 2009. When calling, be sure to mention Wellston Reunion for special pricing. 636-946-5544

Jokes taken from 1939 Year Book:

Editor's Note: Isn't it funny how things haven't changed in almost 70 years!

Beverly Braun: I don't know what to say about those two peroxide blondes who made such a fuss at the game."

Miss McCann: "O! Just say the bleachers went wild!"

Coach Stigall, however, is working the eleven overtime in perspiration for the annual tilt with Ritenour.

"Do you think the candidate put enough fire into his speech!"

"Oh, yes. The trouble was, he didn't put enough of his speech in the fire."

                             *

Actor: "Yes, my friends, usually my audiences are glued to their seats."

Friend: "What a quaint way of keeping them there."

"Say Mister," said the bright youth to the butcher, "do you keep joints to suit all purses?"

"Sure," said the butcher.

"Well, what have you for an empty one?"

"Cold shoulder," answered the butcher sweetly.

Teacher: "Can you give me an example of wasted energy?"

Harold H. "Yes, sir. Telling a hair-raising story to a baldheaded man."

Doc.: "What kind of filling do you want in that tooth, son?"

Billy B.: "Chocolate, please."

Parson: "Does your father pray, Art?"

Art: "Yes Parson. When he sat down to supper last night, and the first thing he said was 'Good Lord! We've got beans again!' "

First Drunk: "When I wuz born I weighed only a poun' an' a half. I wuz this long."

Second Drunk: "Noooooooo. Did you live?"

First Drunk: "Did I live? You ought to see me now."

"Who's that brunette over there?"

"That's Bartley's girl."

"Why, I thought he went with a blond!"

"He did, but she dyed."

"Well, Doc, you sure kept your promise when you said you'd have me walking again in a month."

"Well, well, that's fine."

"Yes, I had to sell my car when I got your bill."

Marion Stark '54

Where in the World is Marion Stark(Class of '54)
Check out the link taking you to the missing alumni list in your class. They may not even know they are missing!!  If there’s someone on the list that you know the whereabouts of (dead or alive) please email us the information, or have them contact us. As you see there are only a few classes with people missing. Most classes have someone who takes the initiative to keep their class list current. While this is not an easy task to undertake, it does make the job easier for the Reunion Committee. Check all the classes, because someone’s brother, sister, aunt, uncle, parents or even neighbor, might be on the "Missing List". The list spans a period of over 30 years. MISSING ALUMN

Dear WHS:

Henry's death comes as a terrible shock to me. Although Henry and his family had been friends of mine since childhood, we recently were in touch via e-mail, thanks to the Welhisco monthly Flashlight. I feel such a loss at this time and would greatly appreciate any further information regarding his passing. I'm so sorry to hear about this. I'm enclosing a recent photo Henry had sent me. Thank You, Bruce Eyster '65

FUNNIES FOUND ON THE INTERNET

Meter Reader's

Two gas company servicemen, a senior training supervisor and a young trainee, were out checking meters in a suburban neighborhood. They parked their truck at the end of the alley and worked their way to the other end. At the last house a woman looking out her kitchen window watched the two men as they checked her gas meter.

Finishing the meter check, the senior supervisor challenged his younger coworker to a foot race down the alley back to the truck to prove that an older guy could outrun a younger one.

As they came running up to the truck, they realized the lady from that last house was huffing and puffing right behind them. They stopped and asked her what was wrong.

Gasping for breath, she replied, "When I see two gas men running as hard as you two were, I figured I'd better run too!"
